On July 27, the Gran Teatre del Liceu will present Donizetti’s Opera Lucia Di Lammermoor in the special performance “Under 35”, an evening for younger audiences. The main roles will be sung by Serena Sáenz (Lucia), César Cortés (Edgardo), and Carlos Pachón (Enrico), all of them young singers with promising careers who have passed through the classrooms of the Liceu Conservatory.
Serena Sáenz studied at the Liceu Conservatory Professional Center and finished her higher studies at the Superior Center. Serena Sáenz was a fellow of the Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation during the academic years 2014-15 and 2015-16. During the 2016-17 academic year she went to Berlin to study at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler”, within the framework of the Erasmus agreement of the Liceu Conservatory with that school. Serena’s stay in Berlin, which favoured her connection with the German music scene, led her to make her debut in the role of Zerbinetta in Richard Strauss’s opera Ariadne auf Naxos at the Staatsoper in Berlin, one of the most important opera houses in Germany. Serena finished her studies at the Liceu Conservatory in 2018, being awarded the Extraordinary Performance Prize.
The young Colombian tenor César Cortés came to Barcelona with a joint scholarship from the Liceu Conservatory Foundation and the Bogota Philharmonic Orchestra to do his Master’s studies in Singing and Opera Interpretation between 2016 and 2019. Since then he has revealed himself as one of the new promises of singing. In this sense, he has received several awards such as: the award for Best Male Voice of 2018 awarded by Ópera Joven de Cataluña, the 3rd Prize of the First Josep Palet de Martorell Singing Contest, the special awards from the Association of Friends of the Opera of Sarrià and that of the 7 Portes Restaurant.
The baritone Carlos Pachón participated in the production of La Cenerentola of the Master of Opera 2017-2018 of the Liceu Conservatory thanks to a grant of the Liceu Conservatory Foundation within the framework of the institutional agreement with the International Opera Competition of Sonora ‘Francisco Araiza’ . In the same year 2018, he was the winner of the 2018 Current Opera Award “To the most promising young performer” awarded by this prestigious publication, the only magazine specialized in the lyrical genre published in this country.
