The purpose of the institution and its activities
The LICEU CONSERVATORY FOUNDATION is a non-profit cultural and educational institution, with social initiative and public service, continuing the activity initiated in 1837 with the Liceo Filarmónico Dramático Barcelonés de Montesión. Its purpose is to serve society through teaching, artistic expression and knowledge transfer, always with the firm conviction that music contributes to human, ethical and social progress. The mission of the Foundation, according to its statutes, is the promotion and promotion of musical education in all styles and educational levels.
The Foundation develops its activities in several buildings in the center of Barcelona.
The Historic Center, located in Les Rambles, 63, in the building that shares with the Gran Teatro del Liceu. While them have become separate institutions, the theater was created by the Conservatory in order to have the right place to foster its students talent. On the upper floor is the Teatrino, an emblematic room with capacity for one hundred localities, where the activity of teachers such as Pau Casals, Engelbert Humperdinck or Higini Anglès has been developed, and students like Francesc Viñas, Montserrat Caballé, Manuel Ausensi or Victory of Los Angeles, and other great musicians has received their training in the center. And many other young people interested in music that, without having developed a musical career, also had occasion to act or do their exams in that endearing space.
The Professional Center, located at Plaça Urquinaona, 11, has classrooms perfectly suitable to the needs of high quality professional grade musical teaching, and music school, in the fields of classical, jazz and modern music. It is equipped with a concert hall for 70 spectators, with a beautiful modernist style and it’s located in a privileged place next to Plaza Cataluña.
The Higher Studies Center, at Nou de la Rambla, 88, is the ideal space for bachelor’s and master’s degree studies, the Foundation main office and the place from where it is managed. The classrooms and resources of the building are fully adapted to the demands of a professionalizing music training of the highest level with an international dimension.
It has the Conservatori Liceu Auditorium, a concert hall with 394 locations, considered unanimously one of the best auditoriums of its kind, very suitable for chamber music and also perfectly adapted to symphonic music, jazz and modern music, theater and opera. A stable programme is carried out annually through the concert cycles: Liceu Jove, Liceu Jazz, Liceu Cambra, Liceu Familiar and Liceu Jam Sessions.
In this building, in addition to the Auditorium, there are other spaces of diverse size and resources, so the students and gest musicians performances can always be acommodated in the most appropriate space: the Orchestra Hall, with 100 localities, the Chamber Hall, for 30 listeners, the 00 Classroom, recently remodeled as a multi- purpose space, and Cafè del Conservatori, where live jazz can often be listened, and where the Jam sessions of the school take place.
The Foundation fulfills its purpose through four commitments, thanks to which it articulates its activity: the institutional commitment, the educational commitment, the artistic commitment and the social commitment. These commitments are made through the activities that the institution develops in its own facilities, and also through the many collaborative agreements that the Foundation has agreed with public and private entities of an academic, cultural or social nature, located in the country or around the world.
