On 1 July, a group of students from the Liceu Conservatory took part in the official ceremony marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, held at the US Consulate General in Barcelona. The ensemble gave a performance that helped to lend a solemn air to a celebration characterised by dialogue between cultural and musical traditions.
Under the direction of Professor Dani Mestre, the students formed a chamber choir which performed two highly symbolic pieces: ‘America the Beautiful’, one of the United States’ most iconic patriotic songs, and ‘El cant dels ocells’, the traditional Catalan song that Pau Casals turned into a universal symbol of peace, freedom and brotherhood.
The concert featured the sopranos Claudia Andreu, Sigurbjörg Telma Sveinsdóttir and Laia Domènech; the contraltos Paula Colombero, Estela Angel and Maitane Ijurco; the tenors Ferran Passola and Luca Almiñana; and the basses David Guitart and Jacob Rifà, all students at the Liceu Conservatory. Furthermore, among the students, Laia Domènech and David Guitart are scholarship holders of the Ferrer Music Foundation.
As part of its internationalisation programme, the Liceu Conservatory Foundation maintains close ties with academic and cultural institutions in the United States. For over forty years, it has been part of Berklee Global as a founding partner of its international network, and has spearheaded numerous collaborative projects, including student and staff exchanges, as well as concerts and conferences with organisations such as the University of North Texas and the New Orleans Jazz Museum, amongst others.
The Chamber Choir’s participation in this commemoration not only reflects this relationship and the Liceu Conservatory’s commitment to artistic excellence, but also highlights music’s capacity to act as a universal language, capable of uniting sensibilities, fostering intercultural dialogue and strengthening ties between communities and institutions within a context of shared celebration.
