Master’s and Postgraduate Program FAQs

What sort of degree do the Master's and the Music Training studies offer?

The Master’s program at the Liceu Conservatory provides an official Master’s Degree by the European Higher Education Area, recognized by Royal Decree 1614/2009, of October 26th, which establishes the ordinance of Artistic Higher Education regulated by the Organic Law of Education of May 3rd.

Students who complete the Music Training studies obtain a diploma certifying the hours and the courses studied.

How long are the courses?

Official Master’s Degrees have a duration of one academic year (October to May, except for the Master’s Degree in Opera, which goes from January to May). The Master’s Degree can be done part-time, after applying the Academic Office of the program, distributing the courses in two academic years.

The Music Training studies have a variable duration, determined by the student according to his/her interests and possibilities. They can be a four-month term or a shorter period or cover one or more academic years.

Are the admission criteria the same for all the studies?

No. For those students who wish to access the official Master’s degrees, they must be in possession of a Bachelor’s Degree, the Bachelor of Music or equivalent, and prove the necessary level to be admitted to the Master’s Degree requested. For the Music Training studies, you do not need to have an official degree.

If I do not hold a Bachelor’s Degree, a Bachelor of Music or an equivalent degree, but I have the necessary technical and musical level, may I access the Master's Degree?

Applicants who do not hold a Bachelor’s Degree, a Bachelor of Music or an equivalent degree, but by the criteria of the academic administration at the Liceu Conservatory, can prove the necessary technical and musical level to continue their studies, they can take the Master’s program. However, they cannot obtain the Official Master’s Degree. Students who are in this case will obtain a Postgraduate Diploma from the Liceu Conservatory.

Is there an age limit to access the Master's Degree?

No.

Is it possible to get scholarships?

The Liceu Conservatory Foundation offers a scholarship program for students who wish to study an Official Master’s Degree at the Liceu Conservatory. There is a yearly call for scholarships for each program, and there are different types of scholarships according to the students’ studies or background.

May the Master's students in Performance specializations choose their main course teacher (Instrument, Chamber Music)?

Yes. The students enrolled choose the main course’s specialization teacher (Instrument, Chamber Music) they like. The assignment may be subject to the availability of the chosen teacher.

When and how to pay your fees.

The cost of the studies must be paid in full at the time of the enrollment. Payment must be made by bank transfer.

In what language are the Master's and Music Training studies taught?

The collective classes can be in Catalan or Spanish, official languages ​​in Catalonia, or in English. The teacher will always consider the characteristics of the group to ensure that all students can properly follow the lessons. The same applies to small group and individual courses but, in these cases, students and teachers can agree to use other languages.

International students have the guarantee of being able to take all the program’s courses in English.

Does the Liceu Conservatory offer housing or accommodation options for students not living in Barcelona?

The Liceu Conservatory has agreements with some nearby residences, as well as information on how to look for a flat or room for rent. The relevant information is available on the website, in the section “Living in Barcelona.”

As an international student, do I need a visa to study at the Liceu Conservatory?

According to current regulations, all foreign citizens from countries who are not members of the European Economic Area and Switzerland, who study in Spain, must have a student visa issued –in their home country– by the Embassy of Spain. Once the student has been accepted and enrolled, the Liceu Conservatory issues a letter of acceptance, so he/she can process the relevant documents.

As a student of the Master's or Music Training studies, may I access other activities other than the lessons?

The students of the Master’s and Music Training studies have an identification card. It is essential to consult or borrow materials from the Library, as well as to access the training rooms, the masterclasses, and concerts of the Center. Also, to identify yourselves as students in the establishments and collaborating entities of the Conservatory, as well as in shows or activities that offer discounts to the students.

As a student of the Master's or Music Training degrees, will I have access to the training rooms to practice?

Master’s students have access to the training rooms. In the case of Music Training students, only if they enroll in the 30-hour type of individual classes per academic year.

How does the access to the training rooms work?

To facilitate the management of the training rooms to all students, the Liceu Conservatory uses the Asimut software, created exclusively for the management of schedules and reservation of areas and training rooms. Big schools and conservatories all over Europe use it as it easily allows the online reservation.
