For the upcoming 2025-2026 school year, the Liceu Conservatory will welcome two new professors to its teaching staff, bringing with them outstanding careers in the fields of composition and musicology.
Composer Joan Magrané and musicologist Sergi Zauner are joining the faculty to contribute their artistic and research experience to the higher education programs of the institution.
Joan Magrané is one of the most internationally projected Catalan composers. He was trained under masters such as Ramon Humet, Agustí Charles, Beat Furrer, and Stefano Gervasoni, and has been an artist-in-residence at institutions like Villa Medici (Rome), Casa de Velázquez (Madrid), La Pedrera, the Palau de la Música Catalana, CNDM, and L’Auditori de Barcelona. His music has been performed by top-tier performers and ensembles like Isabelle Faust, Ensemble Intercontemporain, London Sinfonietta, Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra, among many others, and has been heard at venues like the Philharmonie de Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the Lucerne Festival. Awarded the XXXI Queen Sofia Composition Prize in 2014 by the Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation, his works are published by Éditions Durand and Ficta Edicions.
Sergi Zauner holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, with a dissertation on the written tradition of the Hispanic fabordón (ca. 1480–1620). He has been an associate professor at the UAB and a researcher at Saarland University (Germany), where he participated in innovative projects on computerized analysis of Wagner’s work. Author of several articles on Renaissance music and a specialist in Tomás Luis de Victoria, he is a member of the Catalan Society for Liturgical Studies and collaborates with the Renaissance Musical Lexicon project (Tours).
With these appointments, the Liceu Conservatory Foundation reinforces its commitment to excellence in music education, offering educational programs that feature the best national and international professionals.
