The competition, which will be held in virtual format, is the result of existing collaboration between the two entities

The Liceu Conservatory Foundation and Zhong-Xi-Qiao Intercultural Association, in the framework of their institutional collaboration, and with the aim of promoting cultural exchange, musical excellence and internationalization, proudly present the China-Spain International Music Competition – 2020 Violin edition (competition online) that will take place from July 20th to 27th 2020.

The Contest aims to reaffirm the value and need of Art in hard times, and reinforce the value of music as a creativity tool and a transforming element of society and of union between different cultures. For the first time on a digital platform, great teachers and young violinists will meet in an online setting where they will be able to show their talent, sharing different points of view. Instrumentalists from different categories will meet and learn together, deepening their relationships and mutual understanding.

The contest will be chaired by Dr. Maria Serrat Martin, General Director of the Liceu Conservatory Foundation and will be under the honor sponsoring of IESTA Beijing Musical Instruments Co., Ltd. The jury is made up of great musicians from Europe and Asia such as Corrado Bolsi, Head of the Strings Department and violin teacher at the Liceu Conservatory; Jordán Tejedor, Violin teacher of the Liceu Conservatory;  Mark Messenger, Head of the Strings Department at the Royal College of Music; Lin Wei – Founder and Chair of the LIN  Yao Ji Music Foundation; Founder of HIMA Academy in Iceland;  Xie Nan, Head of the Violin Department at the China Central Conservatory of Music; Liu Jing , Second Violin Soloist Assistant in the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra. The contest will be supervised by Yang Jiuhua, violin teacher and Vice Director of the Conservatory or Music of Zhejiang, China.

Taking into account the pandemic situation, and with the aim that the Contest reaches the largest number of musicians around the world and in order to offer them an opportunity to share their talent, five different categories of participation are planned.  Participation and registration will take place online and will be open until next 19 of July of 2020.

The contest is part of the activities that the Liceu Conservatori Foundation has been carrying out for years with partner institutions in China and that have allowed the development of activities such as the presentation of the opera Der Schauspieldirektor by Mozart in Beijing and other Chinese cities, the presentation of the Zhejiang Youth Orchestra at the Liceu Conservatory Auditorium in 2018 as well as the musicians from China who in these years have studied in Barcelona in our Bachelor’s and Master programs.

The competition is divided into 2 categories: category A, students of official music schools (professional, higher and postgraduate music conservatories), in the subcategories of 12-18 years and from 19 years, and the category B, which is dedicated to students who are not students in official music centers but who are passionate about music and the violin, in the subcategories of 7-12 years and 13-19 years. Those interested, according to the specific category in which they participate, must upload a video to Youtube with their interpretation of the work. The registration fee is 70 euros.

As for the prizes, each category will have 6 winners and 6 finalists, in addition to the certified recognition of the work of the teachers of the winners. The financial endowment will be 500, 375, 250, 125 and 100 € respectively, from the first to the fifth prize, as well as an official certificate and an invitation to perform at the final gala of the competition (where will perform the awarding of prizes) and other minor prizes.
