This year, the Barcelona Jazz Festival has decided to award Liceu Conservatory Foundation with the Gold Medal. This distinction has been awarded to figures of the highest international level in jazz music, such as Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chick Korea or Chucho Valdés, among others, and also personalities of great relevance for their support for jazz and patronage activities, such as Sergi Ferrer-Salat. This will be the first time that an educational institution will be granted with the gold medal.
In this way, the festival organized by The Project rewards Liceu Conservatory teaching activity in the field of Jazz and Modern Music, which is a pioneer in our country. It also recognizes the two entities close professional link. Both institutions celebrate this year its tenth anniversary with the Liceu Jazz Masterclasses & Concerts project, developed with the Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation patronage.
Gold Medal’s award ceremony will take place at the Palau de la Música on November 23, coinciding with the concert offered by the Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés. The medal will be received by Maria Serrat, General Director of the Liceu Conservatory Foundation, by Chucho Valdés himself, Tito Ramoneda, Festival Director, and Joan Anton Cararach, Festival Artistic Director.
It should be noted that Chucho Valdés will be one of the protagonists of this year’s Liceu Jazz with the master class that will offer on November 23 at 12am. One more year, Liceu Conservatory will be one of the most relevant international jazz spots, housing part of the Barcelona Jazz Festival 53rd edition and becoming a reference space, with 27 concerts and 20 master classes by some of the best artists of the jazz world scene.
