Joan B. Domènech

Chamber music, Tuba

He began his musical training in his hometown, Vinaròs, and later continued it at the Professional Conservatory of Music of Castellón. In 2001, he moved to Barcelona to pursue a higher degree at the Higher School of Music of Catalonia with Pablo Manuel Fernández, obtaining distinction. He subsequently expanded his orchestral repertoire studies in Cologne, Germany, with Karl-Heinz Glöckner, soloist of the Gürzenich Orchester Köln. At the same time, he participated in the project of the Academy of the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu. During this training period, he also took advanced courses with Miguel Navarro, Harvey Philips, Oren Marshall, Pierre Piloud, Mel Culberston, and Patrick Harrild, among others. In 2021, he completed his studies with a Master’s in Chamber Music at the Liceu Superior Conservatory Foundation.

As an orchestral musician, he has collaborated with numerous ensembles, such as the Barcelona and National Symphony Orchestra of Catalonia (OBC), the Cadaqués Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the National Chamber Orchestra of Andorra, the Córdoba Orchestra, the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, and the MusicAeterna Orchestra, with which he recorded Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps for the SONY CLASSICS label. Since 2002, he has been the Principal Tuba of the Vallès Symphony Orchestra (OSV).

Throughout his career, he has worked with renowned conductors such as Sebastian Weigle, Eiji Oue, David Coleman, Muhai Tang, Simon Rattle, Nelo Santi, Jesús López Cobos, Josep Pons, and Teodor Currentzis, among others. He has also shared the stage with acclaimed soloists like Josep Carreras, Montserrat Caballé, Kiri Te Kanawa, José Cura, Anna Netrebko, Antonio Meneses, Christian Lindberg, and Carles Santos, among others.

He has been part of various chamber groups, such as the BCN Brass Ensemble, the brass quintet of the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the BCN216 contemporary ensemble, and the instrumental group of the Carles Santos Company.

He has performed at prominent international festivals, including the Gran Canaria Music Festival, the Diaghilev Festival in Perm (Russia), the International Festival of the Arts-Ruhr-Triennale in Germany, and contemporary music festivals in Paris, Nantes, Reims, Strasbourg, and Warsaw. Particularly noteworthy is his participation as a soloist at the Barcelona Contemporary Music Festival in 2006.

In addition to his career as a performer, he is also active in teaching. Since 2010, he has been a professor of tuba, orchestral repertoire, and chamber music at the Liceu’s Higher Conservatory of Music in Barcelona, and since 2015, at the Municipal Conservatory of Music in Manresa. He has also been a tuba teacher at the National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia (JONC) and at the OSV’s Brass Academy.
