Born in Mont-roig del Camp, Joan Maria Martí Mendoza holds a PhD cum laude with a European Distinction in Art History and Musicology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, where he conducted research into the Farcid epistles of Saint Stephen in Europe under the supervision of Professors Maricarmen Gómez and Jesús Alturo. He completed a pre-doctoral fellowship at the Università degli Studi di Padova, supervised by Professor Antonio Lovato, during which he furthered his study of medieval sacred music.
He holds a Master’s degree in Research in Musicology, Music Education and Early Music Performance from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, having achieved a First-Class Honours grade in his Master’s thesis, which focused on the study of the tonary in the manuscript E-Bca Ripoll 74 concerning the learning of liturgical chants at Ripoll Monastery around the year 1000, under the supervision of Professor Jordi Ballester. Prior to this, he completed a Second-Level Degree in History and Musicology at the University of La Rioja and obtained a diploma in Music Education from the University of Barcelona.
In the field of music, she has studied music, singing and the violin on a self-directed basis. She subsequently completed a three-year course in Early Music Performance at the E. F. Dall’Abaco Conservatory in Verona (Italy), with Cristina Miatello (singing), Carmen Leoni and Alberto Rasi (chamber music).
He has taught on the Primary Education degree programme (specialising in Music) and on the dual degree programme in Early Years and Primary Education at the University of Barcelona. He is currently a lecturer at the University Extension Programme at Rovira i Virgili University, where he delivers lectures on the history of music. He has taught courses on the history of music through musical instruments, the history of women in music, and the history of music through painting, sculpture and literature at the ICE of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He has taught courses on the history of music for the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation and has worked as a teacher in music schools and as the conductor of various choral groups.
He regularly takes part in national and international conferences, delivering lectures and presentations on medieval and modern music. He has published several popular music books with the publisher Robinbook-Redbook, four of which feature on the recommended reading lists of universities and conservatoires in both Spain and abroad. With the same publisher, he has published the monograph *Las herederas de Euterpe. Una historia de la música en clave femenina* (The Heiresses of Euterpe: A History of Music through a Feminine Lens). He is also the author of several chapters in collective research volumes and of articles in specialist academic journals, in which he presents the results of his musicological research. His study on the Baroque organ of Mont-roig del Camp and its organists was awarded the Vila de Mont-roig Research Prize in 2023, and the complete study was published in 2024.
