Gemma Abrié is a singer, composer, double bassist and teacher with a 25-year professional career and over 12 years’ teaching experience. She graduated cum laude with a Higher Degree in Music, specialising in Jazz and Modern Music, from the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) in 2012 and undertook an Erasmus exchange at the Conservatoire National de Paris in 2010. she has complemented her training with a Master’s degree in Musicology, Music Education and Early Music Performance at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), as well as various certifications in vocal technique and voice rehabilitation (Mònica Miralles, Complete Vocal Technique and workshops in Estill Voice Training and NeuroVoz). She has taught at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC), the Conservatori Superior de les Illes Balears, and the ESEM Taller de Músics in Barcelona, and continues to teach at the Escola Municipal de Música – Centre de les Arts i Conservatori de L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (EMMCA).
A singer by vocation, composer and occasional double bassist, her career in Spain has been closely linked to her projects as a bandleader (Gemma Abrié Swingtet, Wondering, WoM, Abrié Cordero Duo, Manel Camp and Gemma Abrié, Gemma Abrié and Josep Traver Duet) and her appearances with major jazz ensembles such as the Ivanow Jazz Group, the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra, the Vicens Martín Dream Big Band, La Locomotora Negra and The New Catalan Ensemble. She also regularly takes part in projects such as those led by Martí Serra and Aleix Tobias, and has shared the stage with artists such as Carme Canela, Sílvia Pérez Cruz and Guillem Roma. On the international stage, she performs regularly as a soloist at jazz, blues and gospel festivals in France, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands, collaborating with ensembles and musicians from the European and American jazz scenes.
In the recording field, he has released several albums as a bandleader and has appeared on more than twenty other recordings, notably “Amalgama” – a collection of his own compositions produced by the Brazilian musician Munir Hossn – and “Wondering…”, a tribute project to the music of Stevie Wonder that grew out of his acclaimed academic project.
