Shanghai is visiting Barcelona as the guest city for the 2026 La Mercè festivities. As part of this, the Liceu Conservatory Foundation is hosting jazz teaching staff and students from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, as part of its internationalisation agreements.
The visit will culminate in the Live Room with a joint jam session between the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Jazz Ensemble and students and teachers from the Liceu Conservatory.
The Shanghai Conservatory of Music Jazz Ensemble has developed its own distinctive, specifically Shanghainese style, combining international musical languages with sounds rooted in the Chinese musical tradition. An avant-garde jazz project with an Eastern sensibility, designed to build bridges between cultures.
The ensemble comprises teachers and students from the conservatoire and features the outstanding contribution of Liu Wenwen, who plays the ‘suona’, a traditional Chinese wind instrument sometimes known as the ‘Chinese trumpet’, although its sound has very different characteristics.
