Steve Coleman will offer a master class on November 12 at the Higher Center of the Fundació Conservatori Liceu, within the Liceu Jazz – Masterclasses & Concerts concert series, which from October to December 2022 will schedule 19 master classes and 26 concerts by renowned jazz artists, turning the city of Barcelona into the nerve center of international jazz. These activities will take place in the Auditori Conservatori Liceu, a space located in the heart of the Raval district, fully consolidated and recognized as one of the best of its kind in our country.
Saxophonist Steve Coleman is a true genius who has become an inspiration for an entire generation of Jazz. He was one of the first who knew how to see the possibilities that rap and DJs offered to renew this music, with which he also became a teacher for many musicians outside the limits of Jazz. Additionally, Steve Coleman has researched the African and Caribbean origins of Jazz, especially Cuban music. Coleman is one of the leading representatives of the M-Base movement, a stylistic current within jazz born in the mid-1980s in Brooklyn, New York, along with Graham Haynes, Cassandra Wilson, Geri Allen, Robin Eubanks and Greg Osby. The M-Base movement (acronym for Macro-Basic Array of Structured Extemporization) represented a new proposal regarding artistic creation that also included dancers and poets.
With Five Elements, Coleman works on an amalgamation of vocal and musical improvisations superimposed on a rhythmic base of African influence that have placed the group in the forefront of innovations in black music. His composition techniques are inspired not only by improvisation, but also by spontaneity, conceiving music as a form of vibration and energy.
The Liceu Jazz – Masterclasses & Concerts concert series is part of the close collaboration that the Fundació Conservatori Liceu has maintained for 11 years with the Voll-Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival, with the patronage of the Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation.
Masterclasses such as that of Steve Coleman are one of the most important bets of the Liceu Conservatory, which enrich the academic experience of students and music lovers in our environment on their way to professionalism, allowing them to play and interact with the great masters of the current jazz scene.
Feel free to take part in this event which is part of a unique proposal in the country that wants to bring the best jazz to students and music lovers!
