Nduduzo Makhathini will offer a master class on November 23 at the Higher Center of the Fundació Conservatori Liceu, within the Liceu Jazz – Masterclasses & Concerts concert series, which from October to December 2022 will schedule 19 master classes and 26 concerts by renowned jazz artists, turning the city of Barcelona into the nerve center of international jazz. These activities will take place in the Auditori Conservatori Liceu, a space located in the heart of the Raval district, fully consolidated and recognized as one of the best of its kind in our country.
Nduduzo Makhathini was born in Umgungundlovu, South Africa, a former territory where a Zulu king established his capital in the 19th century. He grew up, therefore, surrounded by music from the rituals and ceremonies of his ethnic group, as well as the songs of the Zionist church, which he recognizes as his main influences. He started in the study of jazz from the recordings of Charlie Parker, but soon realized that he connected more deeply with the modal perspective of John Coltrane, having as its maximum reference the sound of his emblematic quartet with Tyner, Jones and Garrison. Makhathini has a spiritual relationship with jazz, which he links to his own African roots. He has recently recorded several works for the Blue Note label that delve into this ancestral relationship between jazz and its origins.
The Liceu Jazz – Masterclasses & Concerts concert series is part of the close collaboration that the Fundació Conservatori Liceu has maintained for 11 years with the Voll-Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival, with the patronage of the Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation.
Masterclasses such as that of Nduduzo Makhathini are one of the most important bets of the Liceu Conservatory, which enrich the academic experience of students and music lovers in our environment on their way to professionalism, allowing them to play and interact with the great masters of the current jazz scene.
Feel free to take part in this event which is part of a unique proposal in the country that wants to bring the best jazz to students and music lovers!
