The Liceu Gran Ensemble is an innovative ensemble that breaks any barrier between musical styles and genres. It is a project born from the collaboration between the Departments of Jazz and Modern Music and the Department of Orchestral Instruments. The ensemble of the Big Band is mixed in an unusual way with the string section, based on an experimental repertoire that takes the public to a special atmosphere by the hands of its director, Toni Vaquer.
In recent editions, the ensemble has stood out for its innovative, transgressive and shimmering vision in regard to the mixture of instruments and sonorities from both jazz and classical music, mixing the revision of compositions by Hermeto Pascoal, Vulfpeck, Jordi Bonell or Giulia Valle, among others, with the interpretation of arrangements by the members of the group themselves, whom Toni Vaquer encourages to write their own arrangements, creating an electrifying internal cohesion.
The Liceu Jazz – Masterclasses & Concerts concert series is part of the close collaboration that the Fundació Conservatori Liceu has maintained for 12 years with the Voll-Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival, with the patronage of the Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation.
