A high-level professional production centered around a fundamental work by Mozart
Liceu Cambra Masterclasses & Concerts is synonymous with great music and musical wisdom shared by the greatest performers and creators. This concert series reaches its ninth edition this year, reaffirming itself as one of the most interesting initiatives of its kind, and, as always expected, a meeting point for the students of the Higher Center of the Liceu Conservatory with the great international masters, and as an appointment for music lovers from Barcelona with the best music.
The Master’s Degree in Opera Performance offered by the Liceu Conservatory gives young professional singers the opportunity to grow and develop as performers in an environment of artistic excellence and high musical competence. Each year, the objective of the Master’s Degree, which involves the preparation, rehearsal, and staging of a significant work from the operatic repertoire, is materialized in two public performances that culminate this process of interpretive perfection, while also providing an experience within a professional production for the performers and an attractive high-level artistic offer for all opera lovers in the city.
If in previous years the Master’s Degree students offered us Così fan tutte, The Magic Flute, Cinderella, The Elixir of Love, or The Marriage of Figaro, this year their work will focus on The Clemency of Titus by W. A. Mozart, a new challenge for the young musicians and promising singers who will perform this extraordinary work.
Liceu Chamber thus incorporates the performance of this fundamental work from the operatic repertoire into its programming, with a cast formed by the students of this academic program, under the musical direction of Diego Martín, the stage direction of Susana Egea and the artistic direction of Luciana Serra.
The work carried out is complemented by the teachings of specialists in Mozart’s repertoire and with great experience in the performance of his operas, who in this occasion will be the professors Elena Copons and Joan Martín-Royo, who will be in charge of the vocal preparation of the Master’s Degree students. Each year, a figure with a great international trajectory is also invited as the artistic director of the project. In this production, it will be the great Italian soprano Luciana Serra, a singer with a long career that has taken her to the most important stages in the world, to interpret the leading roles of the repertoire under the baton of the most outstanding conductors. This proposal, with its extraordinary artistic interest, will be coordinated by professor Oriol Rosés.
The Clemency of Titus will be performed in an ideal space, the Auditorium of the Liceu Conservatory, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra formed by the students of orchestral instruments from the Center, who will also have a unique opportunity to experience an operatic evening from the orchestra pit, with the great artistic responsibility that this entails.
The Clemency of Titus is a serious opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, set in ancient Rome and with a plot that exalts compassion and forgiveness. Mozart’s music in this work is expressive and moving, and contains numerous standout arias for memorable characters. It was written in 1791 and is one of Mozart’s last works. It premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague on September 6, 1791, on the occasion of the coronation of Emperor Leopold II, a few months before the composer’s death.
The Master’s Degree in Artistic Education in Opera Performance offered by the Liceu Superior Conservatory has established itself as a professionalizing offer for young talented opera singers, who have the opportunity to prepare and perform a work from the great repertoire under the guidance of experts in the operatic scene and interpretation.
The constant pursuit of artistic excellence by the Center’s students and their path towards professionalization has one of its great milestones in the academic year with this highly anticipated The Clemency of Titus.
