The Liceu Cambra Masterclasses & Concerts series presents a selection of masterclasses led by internationally renowned figures in the fields of creation and interpretation. In this tenth edition, the series affirms itself as an educational and artistic proposal of great significance, offering students at the Liceu Conservatory the opportunity to learn from the most distinguished masters, while also becoming an unmissable event for music lovers in Barcelona.
This masterclass, focused to the viola, will be taught by Matthias Buchholz, who has been doing so since 1990 he has been a professor of viola at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, giving masterclasses in Europe, Asia, and America. As a member of the Linos Ensemble, he has recorded 25 CDs and premiered works by Aribert Reimann and Heinz Holliger. He also served as professor of viola at the HEM in Geneva (2013-2018).
Born in Hamburg, he began his musical education in his hometown, continuing in Cincinnati, Detmold, and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with teachers such as Bruno Giuranna, Karen Tuttle, and Michael Tree. He won prizes at the German Music Competition (1978), Los Angeles (1982), and Budapest (1984). As principal violist of the RSO Stuttgart (1986-1990), he worked with conductors such as Sir Georg Solti, Erich Leinsdorf, and Neville Marriner.
He has been invited to international festivals including Avignon, Berlin, Warsaw, Schleswig-Holstein, and Marlboro, collaborating with artists such as Heinz Holliger, Benny Goodman, and members of the Guarneri Quartet. As a chamber musician, he has performed with the Auryn, Petersen, and Vermeer quartets.
