Liceu Cambra Masterclasses & Concerts is a benchmark of excellence in the world of music and a key space for the exchange of knowledge between some of the most influential performers and creators globally. In its tenth edition, the cycle has become one of the most outstanding initiatives in its field, reaffirming itself as an essential space for both students of the Conservatori Liceu and internationally renowned teachers. Moreover, it has become an unmissable event for music lovers in Barcelona who wish to enjoy artistic experiences of the highest quality.
This masterclass will be taught by Jacques Zoon, a renowned flutist recognized internationally for his mastery in performing classical music. His technical skill, combined with great interpretative expressiveness, has earned him recognition in international circuits.
Born in Heiloo (The Netherlands), he studied at the Sweelinck Conservatory with Koos Verheul and Harris Starreveld in Amsterdam, and later at the Banff Center for Arts with Geoffrey Gilbert in Alberta, Canada. He has received numerous awards, such as second prize in the Willem Pipjer competition with pianist Bernd Brackman (1981), the special jury prize in the Jean-Pierre Rampal competition in Paris (1987), and an Edison for his recordings of his repertoire of contemporary Dutch music for flute and piano, which he won again with Brackman (1997). In 1998 the Boston Globe named him ‘Musician of the Year’.
His professional career as a performer has been very intense. He has been a member of the EUYO and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, under the baton of Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein. Since 1997 he has been a flute soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and since 2004 with the Mozart and Lucerne Festival Orchestras. He has performed as soloist with the Lyon National Orchestra with Emmanuel Krivine, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra with Heinz Holliger, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra with Valery Gergiev, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe with Claudio Abbado and the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Seiji Ozawa, among others. He has made numerous recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, Decca, Chandos, Boston Records, Vanguard Classics, Schwann-Koch and Pony Canyon.
In addition to his activity as an artist, he has had a very active academic and teaching career. He has taught at the Rotterdam Conservatory (1988-1994), Indiana University (1994-1997), Boston University and the New England Conservatory (1997-2001), as well as at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. Since 2002 he is professor of flute at the Geneva Conservatory and since 2006 he is guest artist at the Wind Department of the Madrid Institute for Chamber Music. Since 2009 he is professor of the Flute Department of the Escuela de Música Reina Sofía.
