Bass Eric Halfvarson, a new addition to the Faculty of the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona

09/07/2019

Bass Eric Halfvarson, a new addition to the Faculty of the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona

The Faculty of the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona will have the addition of bass Eric Halfvarson on the next School year 2019-2020. Halfvarson will teach in the Performance Master and Music Training programs.

Since his debut in Houston, back in 1973, Eric Halfvarson has brought his voice to the main theaters around the world: Vienna, Bayreuth, Munich, London, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc.

He had already been a guest of the Liceu Conservatory, where he has given masterclasses in former editions of Liceu Cambra. He is a household name in the Barcelona stage, where he has provided highlights like his acclaimed Hagen in Götterdämmerung (that he has sung worldwide, from the Wiener Staatsoper to Washington), the Pope at the eccentric Benvenuto Cellini directed by Terry Gilliam, or one of his greatests roles, the Gran Inquisidor of Don Carlo (that he has brought from New York to Vienna with Zubin Mehta).

The powerful voice of this bass Singer has become essential in the most challenging Verdian and Wagnerian roles, that demand extreme ranges and physical endurance, not to talk about the psychological depth needed to impersonate the intimidating darkness that is inherent to these characters.

Halfvarson has been up to the challenge, showing an artistry that has been widely acclaimed by the critics, not only in the aforementioned roles, but also in Die Walküre, Parsifal or Das Rheingold (with Rattle and Badea, among other conductors). His performance as Rocco in Fidelio has been applauded by the Washington Post. His acclaimed performance in Bluebeard’s Castle has been said to “provide not only power, but also pathos to the role of the frightening aristocrat. He was dignified and powerful when showing his kingdom, he was hideous when singing the secrets of the bleak fortress, and he was frightening when he forbad Judith to ask for the keys of the castle doors. Nevertheless, he conveyed a deep sadness related to his own terrible power and awful past deeds.”

It is a unique opportunity for engaged singing students to learn from the huge experience of this highest-level bass and teacher, a most renowned singer who is in touch with the current operatic scene, and who will teach you in a most supporting and personal way.
