Degree in Music

Introduction

argaiv1404

The Conservatori del Liceu has developed its higher education courses in music in such a way as to offer students a high level of training, in keeping with the challenges and demands of our time, aspiring towards excellence in an increasingly competitive world scenario. It can do this thanks to the experience, artistic ability and teaching skills of working musicians who carry out a busy professional life and are key figures in the musical world both inside and outside Spain.

While thorough practice in the different specialities is of prime importance, whether it be performing, either individually or in groups, creating music or learning techniques for conducting works of different styles, types, trends or from different periods, theoretical subjects also play an important part. These have to ensure that all musicians are totally familiar with the basic tools in their approach to a musical work, immersing themselves in what makes up the language, the rudiments and mechanisms of how a piece works and the keys to its historic, social, aesthetic and stylistic context.

Throughout the higher education programme, the core work of the future musicians will be centred on the many projects, both performing and creating, which they will undertake in an environment which increasingly simulates the real professional world: these range from solo recitals, chamber concerts or performing in jazz combos or other ensembles, right up to large orchestras; it also includes theatre or opera activities, encouraging musical composition, conducting different orchestral and chamber projects and finally teaching and managing music-related projects.

Programme structure:

Personal tutors
In order to ensure the education process is going according to plan and that students can at any time benefit from the artistic and academic guidance they may need, the teacher of their main instrument or main subject will also be their personal tutor, constantly liaising with the heads of different departments.

Hands-on training
We regard it as of utmost importance to put hard work into learning the chosen instrument or main subject, guided by highly qualified lecturers and teachers. In addition a programme of theoretical and practical secondary subjects should be followed to guarantee an all-round training.

Student mobility and internacional relations
The Conservatori del Liceu has set up a number of international agreements with other higher education music centres and cultural organisations in Europe, Asia and America so as to give our future musicians the opportunity to do exchanges and personally experience first hand musical activities around the world.

Multidisciplinary education
The Conservatori’s study programme is adaptable to the particular needs of each pupil so as to achieve a comprehensive training and at the same time focus on the specialisation which most suits their abilities and artistic ambitions.  Students can choose a varied, interdisciplinary study route according to their particular profile which will give them access to a range of future opportunities.

A commitment to future employment
Once their studies are over the future professional musicians will have already enjoyed a broad professional experience on stage and in the many different facets of musical practice. Different concerts, the programme in the Conservatori’s concert hall, the Auditori, joint projects with other concert halls, organisers, festivals and so on, all contribute to making this possible.

Specialities

Performance (Orchestral Instrument in Classical and Contemporary Music Programme)

The course which leads to a degree in Performance will fully equip students to have command of performing techniques of the instrument and its repertoire, and where relevant, of the complementary instruments. They will learn how to perform to a very high standard in accordance with the features of their chosen course and instrument, both as soloists and as a member of a group. The practical side of their training will be complemented by exercises in analysis and musical thought, so as to have a thorough philosophical and humanistic preparation which will be helpful when it comes to the research involved once they are working as professionals.

At the heart of studying orchestral instruments there is not only individual practise and achieving prime technical skills, but also, group musical activities, from small chamber ensembles to a full orchestra, whether performing symphonies or opera. Any student on this course should reach a high level as a soloist and also gain experience in orchestral and chamber music in similar conditions to what they will find in professional life, working on the most demanding pieces in the repertoire under the baton of top level conductors.

The guitar has a deep-rooted tradition in Barcelona and Catalonia which has meant that the Conservatori del Liceu has always been one of the main centres for studying it. Students of this programme must develop skills that are technically excellent and acquire stylistic awareness so as to be able to perform a very wide repertoire. This programme can also follow the Flamenco guitar route, a speciality which has recently gained academic recognition, which its artistic value duly deserves. In either of these options, ensemble practice is of paramount importance.

Composition

The course leading up to a degree in Composition aims to help students qualify in musical creation with a total command of all aspects of musical structure, from a theoretical and practical point of view. The idea is to forge the development of a clearly defined artistic personality which at the same time is open to evolving. The subjects in the curriculum will encourage musical analysis and critical thought on creative work, so that the future composer can draw on a sound methodological and humanistic training to help in the task of musical research and experimentation.

Conducting

The course leading to a degree in Conducting will equip graduates to conduct choirs, orchestras and other instrumental or mixed groups. This will involve studying in-depth a wide range of vocal and instrumental scores and learning techniques for conducting works of varied styles, types, periods and fashions. The subjects in the curriculum will lead to knowing about vocal and instrumental technique and an ability to work in a team, particularly as a leader and communicator, as well as giving a sound methodological and humanistic training which will help when working in the professional world.

In keeping with our tradition, this course is very performance-based. We ensure therefore that the different instrument lecturers, particularly those in charge of Group Music, both chamber and orchestral, play an important part in the Conducting course. The teaching staff in this department is joined by various specialists, both in the subjects of Performance and in Composition and Theory, who also work in other departments and various guest lecturers (Manel Valdivieso, Antoni Ros Marbà, Edmon Colomer, Karl Anton Rickenbacher, to name a few).

Production and Management

The Conservatori’s programme in Production and Management is unique in the currently available education system; it is aimed at a generation of musicians seeking self management in business in a world where musical and artistic content form part of production, in the broadest sense.

It is increasingly prevalent when staging musical work to bring in a wide range of sensory elements. In all kinds of productions, other theatrical resources are often used, like ballet for example, or very often audiovisual effects.

This trend goes across the board: in other areas of music, like art videos, or different kinds of art installations, music often plays a vital part in understanding the work. With this in mind the musician of today needs to be knowledgeable about the creative potential offered by the latest multimedia technology.

The exceptional facilities and equipment of the Conservatori include special classrooms for this purpose, real multimedia labs where students can fully develop ideas and experiment, learning about technical methods for professional music recording and editing, and also about additional multimedia content. Lecturers who are experts in the latest avant garde technology are responsible for teaching these subjects.

Teacher Training

The course leading to a degree in Teaching intends to take students to a professional qualification in one or more disciplines of musical practice (playing and/or theoretical) as well as giving them a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge  about teaching including its methodology, psychology and artistic aspects. In addition they will have plenty of hands-on experience in teaching. Teaching graduates will be fully equipped to take on work in all kinds of establishments, general and specialist, at every level in the education system.

In keeping with our tradition, this course particularly focuses on Instrument teaching, though based on very broad teacher training. The future teachers must have a thorough training as performers; even though they have a different purpose from those going on to play instruments, the training is equally demanding. To substantiate our conviction in this the Teacher Training department shares lecturers with the different Performance and Composition departments, all of them with a particular devotion to educational research (Emilio Molina, Tensy Krismant, Joan Vayreda, and others).
